About Popi,
Born in Congo, on the African continent, Paul Anderson spent most of his youth living overseas. Some of his first works were pencil drawings of the landscapes and life of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic. 'It's too easy to say as so many have said 'I've been artist most of my life'. More realistically the part of me that is an artist was given to me by my parents and by God and it is a gift I have had all my life.'
During his high school and college years, Paul began to paint and draw poster size abstract concepts using felt pens and tempera paint. He has created art with watercolor, glass, wood, acrylic and oil paint. The past few years Paul has concentrated on oil painting. About his training Paul says, “I am primarily self taught but have received training in continuing education classes and one-on-one lessons from other working artists. I con¬tinually study other artists work and where available their processes.”
Paul’s mentor, John Karl Claes is an artist who paints the agricultural landscapes of the west – mostly California’s Central Valley. Modern artists that have had a dominate influence and are favorites are Sean Scully, Thornton Willis and Mark Rothko.
Paul began to bring his art to the public display after going through a change from realism to expressionist and abstract. The majority of his work is organic, geometric, and abstract expressionist. Paul paints what he sees in his mind’s eye which may or may not have familiarity or relationship to real images. He signs his work as “Popi.” His work is copyrighted and registered under his full name Paul Anderson.
